The purity of gold is measured in Carats, pure gold has a rating of 24ct, it usually has other metals mixed with it for example: Copper or Silver, this makes it harder and more durable.
It’s simple. The higher the carat , the purer the gold.

Testing Precious Metals
Firstly a magnet test, precious metals are not magnetic.

The most popular test is the acid test. First we find a part of the gold that is unseen, a spot of acid is placed on the area of the item, the acid is then blotted, the paper will then change colour depending on the precious metal that is being tested. The result of this test will then indicate exactly what carat it is.

Weighing your items
To get and accurate weight, a digital scale is used. Different carats are always weighed individually.
